My Story

I was born in 1980 and raised in the coal fields of southwest Virginia by wonderful and loving parents that sculpted and molded me into the man I am today.  I was raised in Grundy and Richlands Virginia where I also attended 2 years of community college after completing high school.  A serious car accident in 2000, which nearly claimed the life of my mom, caused me to take a break from my academic career while I helped my mom and family financially during her recovery.  In 2004 I was afforded the opportunity to return to school and played baseball at Virginia Intermont College in Bristol Virginia, where I received 3 degrees in 2007.  One in Pre-Physical Therapy, one in Physical Education, and one in Sports Medicine.  I then attended East Tennessee State University and received by Doctorate in Physical Therapy in December 2010.

While attending Virginia Intermont College, I met who would later be my wife, Tiffany.  We were married 2 weeks after I received my DPT and we started our journey together.   I was hired as Director of Rehabilitation Services at a small community hospital right out of PT school.  The hospital had a dormant rehabilitation department for the prior 3 years and I was tasked to restart and build that program.  We achieved significant success with growth exceeding budget in all 6 years I served.  However, in 2016 my life took another turn.  My wife and I welcomed our first son and we decided to return home to Virginia.

Upon the birth of my first son in 2016, my wife and I returned to Virginia but this time to northern Virginia where I began working at Chiron Physical Therapy of VA.  Soon after, our second son joined the family in 2018.  It was shortly after the birth of my second son when I started my journey to specialization.  I began fellowship program for RMSK in September of 2018 and a residency for ECS in October of 2018.  I was studying and growing at a steady pace in both areas when the COVID-19 pandemic stopped almost all progress and delayed the completion of my fellowship and residency requirements.  However, I was able to complete the fellowship program in 2021 and became RMSK certified in July of that year.  I also completed my residency in 2023 and became ECS certified in 2024.  After completion of all my certifications, my partners and I launched Chiron Diagnostics which provides EMG and musculoskeletal sonography tests to patients in the northern VA area.

During my studies for ECS board exam, I was surprised that there were not more study materials outside of my mentor and residency.  There were adequate numbers of textbooks and lectures, but no collection of study material outside of what I created on my own.  I created nearly 1200 hand written flash cards to help quiz myself quickly on necessary information between patients and during time I had set aside for study.  While preparing for the ECS board exam I searched diligently for practice exams and was astonished that there were none available.  It was then that PTECSprep.com was conceived.  After completing my ECS exam, I began to digitize my hand-written cards and organizing them by topic.  I also began writing exam questions similar to the ones that I had encountered during the test.  After nearly one year of work, PTECSprep.com was born.  I am here to help all future generations of ECS specialists prepare for the exam with study materials and practice exams that were not available to me.

Right now, there are only 269 certified ECS specialists in the history of the APTA.  I want to grow that number exponentially.  I want to see the growth of the next generation and watch them take our profession to an entirely different level.  I also want to provide any help I can to that next generation so I am paying it forward.  I am offering these materials to all students and residents no matter what residency affiliation you have.  I hope to partner with the APTA and these residencies to help give all students all of the access to material you may need or want so that you can achieve the most distinguished specialty in all of the APTA; the board certified Electrodiagnostic Clinical Specialist title.   Good Luck!!!!
